Manaslu draws 493 climbers, dominates Nepal’s autumn mountaineering

KATHMANDU: Manaslu has emerged as the clear centre of Nepal’s autumn mountaineering season, accounting for 493 of the 579 climbers recorded on 11 peaks so far, according to the Department of Tourism.
The department’s royalty report shows that 41 expedition teams, involving 366 men and 127 women, have obtained permits to climb the 8,163‑metre Manaslu. The mountain alone generated $1.479 million in royalty, equivalent to Rs 224.81 million.
Across the 11 mountains listed, a total of 55 expedition teams comprising 432 male and 147 female climbers have been recorded. The combined royalty stands at $1.547 million (Rs 235.18 million).
After Manaslu, Dhaulagiri I has recorded the second‑highest number of climbers, with 34 climbers from four teams and royalty earnings of $51,000. Danga attracted 16 climbers from two teams, generating $1,168 in royalty.
Other peaks listed in the report include Makalu I, Gangapurna West (Lachenel), Thorong Peak, Norbu Khang, Annapurna IV, Chamlang, Barun Tse and Lamjung Himal. Makalu I recorded three climbers from one team, while Barun Tse had an equal number of male and female climbers, five each.
