Climbers wait for fair weather as heavy snowfall blankets Manaslu

KATHMANDU: Hundreds of climbers who were supposed to head for a summit push from high camps on Mount Manaslu returned to base camp last night after incessant snowfall blanketed the entire climbing route, expedition organisers said.
“Base camp and the climbing route are fully covered in snow, and all climbers who were at Camp 2 and Camp 3 have descended to base camp,” base camp officials from the Expedition Operators Association Nepal (EOA) said.
On Thursday, nine Nepali climbers from the EOA fixed the climbing route to the true summit of Mount Manaslu, becoming the season’s first to scale the world’s eighth-highest mountain.
“More climbers were supposed to head for the summit today, but the weather turned foul,” Pemba Sherpa, chairman of 8K Expeditions, said.
All climbers are now waiting for fair weather, forecast for September 21–23, to launch their summit bid, Pemba said.
With a severe cyclone developing over the Bay of Bengal after September 23, the weatherman also warned of heavy snowfall in the region and urged people to take precautions.
