Board outlines revenue targets, infrastructure needs, and strategic reforms to boost tourism

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has presented a detailed briefing to the International Relations and Tourism Committee of the House of Representatives, outlining sectoral progress, challenges, and strategic plans to enhance tourism growth.

At the meeting held at Singha Durbar, NTB CEO Deepak Raj Joshi reported that the board generated Rs 933.5 million in revenue in the current fiscal year 2081/82 (2024/25) and has set a target of Rs 1.32 billion for 2082/83 (2025/26).

Highlighting promotional efforts, Joshi noted Nepal’s participation in 25 international tourism fairs across key markets and the organization of 15 destination promotion events in partnership with Nepali embassies. Over 333 Nepali businesses joined these events.

NTB’s domestic programs included the "45 Destination Standardization Program," various hospitality and adventure tourism training sessions, and local events such as food and cultural festivals. A special campaign also targeted Indian tourists during the Kumbh Mela, the NTB said.

However, Joshi cited persistent hurdles in infrastructure, workforce, health and safety, seasonal dependence, and policy gaps. “We must closely monitor global competition and evolving tourist behavior,” he said, stressing the need to rebrand Nepal as a top experiential destination.

NTB’s strategic goals include:

  • Tapping new Asian markets while retaining traditional ones
  • Improving digital capacity and tourism products
  • Promoting quality investment
  • Strengthening provincial tourism and resilience
  • Expanding sustainable, inclusive infrastructure

Key infrastructure priorities include upgrading roads like Kathmandu–Pokhara and Narayanghat–Butwal, and better utilizing international airports in Bhairahawa and Pokhara.

NTB aims to attract 2.5 million tourists annually, create 1.4 million jobs, and generate Rs 250 billion in tourism revenue in the coming years.

Tourism Minister Badri Prasad Pandey lauded NTB’s efforts and emphasized ongoing policy and structural reforms. Committee members, including Chair Rajkishor Yadav, pledged support for easing procurement regulations, boosting infrastructure, and facilitating road and air connectivity.
