Rasuwa flood causes over Rs 50 billion tourism damage: Tourism Minister

KATHMANDU: The Rasuwa flood has caused more than Rs 50 billion in preliminary damage to Nepal’s tourism sector, including damage to 142 hotels, 57 restaurants and 141 tourism-related vehicles, Tourism Minister Khadak Raj Paudel said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a meeting of the House of Representatives’ International Relations and Tourism Committee, Minister Paudel said the estimate includes damage to tourism businesses and infrastructure as well as the potential economic impact of the disaster.

The Langtang, Gosainkunda, Parvatikunda and Nathli trekking routes have also been damaged, requiring authorities to explore alternative routes.

Several religious and cultural heritage sites in the affected areas have suffered damage, he said.

The government is planning to develop the affected area as a “climate heritage” site, with options including a museum, memorial or park to be decided after consultations.

Paudel said the government would also step up international communication to reassure visitors that Nepal remains safe and open to tourists despite the disaster.

He said the exact number of foreign tourists missing in the Rasuwa flood would be confirmed after final data are compiled.
