Travelers invited to rediscover the Himalayas as tourism sector regains momentum

KATHMANDU: For travelers dreaming of Himalayan peaks, tranquil lakes, and vibrant culture, Nepal remains very much open for exploration. Even after the early-September “Gen Z” protests that damaged hotels, cable cars, and aviation facilities in major hubs like Kathmandu and Pokhara, the country’s travel community is moving swiftly to welcome visitors back.

Industry groups estimate that the unrest caused losses of more than Rs 25 billion and temporarily displaced some 2,500 tourism workers. Yet the mood among local operators is one of determination, not despair. Drawing on lessons from past challenges—earthquakes, trade blockades, and the pandemic—Nepal’s tourism leaders are rallying to ensure the autumn high season retains its magic.

Public–private partnerships are already in motion. The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, the Nepal Tourism Board, Hotel Association Nepal, and leading trekking and travel associations are working together to repair infrastructure, streamline policies, and send a clear message abroad: Nepal is safe and ready. Digital outreach and new travel advisories will highlight the country’s readiness to host adventure seekers and culture lovers alike.

Visitor numbers show that global interest endures. By mid-September, Nepal had welcomed more than 33,000 international tourists, with August arrivals reaching nearly 89,000. Last year the country drew 1.15 million travelers, steadily approaching the pre-pandemic record of almost 1.2 million.

For Nepali travelers and the international community, the invitation is clear. Whether it’s trekking the Annapurna Circuit, enjoying Pokhara’s serene lakes, or exploring Kathmandu’s historic squares, Nepal offers experiences that remain as compelling as ever. With local businesses eager to greet guests and the natural beauty unchanged, now is an inspiring time to plan—or keep—your Nepal journey.
