Indian visitors lead the way; renewed interest seen from the U.S., Australia, and beyond
KATHMANDU: Nepal’s tourism sector continues to show encouraging signs of recovery, with 88,680 international visitors arriving in August 2025, according to the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB). The figure represents a 22% rise compared to August last year, when the country received just over 72,700 visitors.
Although the numbers are still slightly below pre-pandemic levels of August 2019, the recovery rate has reached 93.6%, a promising indication that Nepal’s appeal as a year-round destination is regaining momentum.
Who’s visiting Nepal?
Travelers from India once again topped the list, with more than 35,500 arrivals, reflecting the growing movement of tourists between the two close neighbors.
Visitors from China (7,533), the United States (6,068), Sri Lanka (5,956), and Bangladesh (4,262) also made strong showings.
From further afield, there has been renewed interest from Oceania, particularly Australia (2,223), and from North America, where arrivals from both the U.S. and Canada exceeded pre-pandemic numbers, a 23% increase.
European arrivals showed moderate growth, with the UK, Italy, and Spain among the top contributors, though still below 2019 levels.
Tourism on the rebound
Tourism officials note that the South Asian region remains Nepal’s strongest base, while adventure and trekking continue to attract long-haul travelers. The positive trend from Australia and the U.S. reflects Nepal’s growing reputation as both a cultural and adventure destination.
With the autumn season now underway, industry insiders are optimistic that Nepal will continue to draw increasing numbers of visitors seeking its unique blend of mountains, culture, and warm hospitality.
