KATHMANDU: Nepal is set to introduce updated hotel classification standards with a stronger emphasis on sustainability, as the government moves to align its hospitality sector with evolving global tourism practices.

The Department of Tourism (DoT) has begun revising the country’s existing Hotel, Resort, Tourist Inn, Tourist Lodge, Motel and Bed and Breakfast (B&B) Classification Standards, 2019 (amended in 2020) to improve service quality, transparency, and environmental responsibility—key factors increasingly valued by international travellers.

At the centre of the proposed reform is the adoption of “Green Hospitality,” a framework that promotes eco-friendly operations, efficient resource use, and sustainable infrastructure across hotels and tourist accommodations.

Officials say the updated standards aim to make Nepal’s accommodation sector more consistent with international benchmarks, while also reflecting local characteristics and expectations unique to the country’s tourism landscape.

To support this transition, the DoT has invited feedback from industry stakeholders, including hotel operators, tourism experts, academics, and other concerned groups. Suggestions have been sought on improving existing standards, defining measurable sustainability indicators, and refining classification criteria based on infrastructure and service quality.

A public notice issued on March 23 provides a 15-day window for submissions. Stakeholders can send their recommendations via email or submit them directly to the department.

The planned overhaul is expected to enhance visitor confidence, promote responsible tourism, and strengthen Nepal’s positioning as a sustainable travel destination.
