KATHMANDU: UN Tourism has unveiled a Road Map to guide preparations for the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism 2027, marking a shift from dialogue to concrete action.

Mandated by the UN General Assembly to implement the International Year, the organization said the Road Map reflects a collaborative process and has been endorsed by its Committee on Tourism and Sustainability (CTS).

UN Tourism Secretary-General Shaikha Al Nuwais said the initiative will help position tourism as a transformative sector within the post-2030 development agenda, emphasizing that sustainability and resilience are ongoing processes rather than fixed goals. Meeting in Madrid, the CTS welcomed the Road Map and praised UN Tourism’s engagement with Member States and the early momentum under its new leadership.

The build-up to 2027 will be anchored in the CTS and guided by a Steering Committee of Member States, with inputs from Regional Commission consultations and endorsement by the Executive Council. Costa Rica’s Minister of Tourism and CTS Chair William Rodríguez López said the International Year provides a timely opportunity to translate shared commitments on sustainability, climate action, and long-term development into coordinated global action.
