Shaikha Al Nowais nominated as first female head of UN Tourism

KATHMANDU: Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais has been nominated as the next Secretary-General of UN Tourism, marking the first time a woman is set to lead the organization in its 50-year history. Her nomination, following formal election by the Council, now awaits approval from the UN Tourism General Assembly. If confirmed, she will begin her term in January 2026.
An accomplished Emirati business leader, Al Nowais brings over 16 years of experience in global hospitality. As Corporate Vice President at Rotana Hotels, she has managed owner relations across the Middle East, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Turkey. She is also a Finance graduate from Zayed University, according to the UN Tourism.
Al Nowais chairs the Tourism Working Group of the Abu Dhabi Chamber, and sits on the boards of the Abu Dhabi Businesswomen Council and Les Roches Hospitality Academy, underlining her influential role in shaping the region’s tourism and hospitality sectors.
Her appointment is seen as a major milestone for gender equality and leadership diversity within global tourism governance.
