With the theme “The Mighty Egg Packed with Natural Nutrition,” the national event in Bharatpur emphasized eggs’ vital role in improving public health and food security.

KATHMANDU: Nepal marked the 22nd World Egg Day on Friday with an engaging celebration highlighting the nutritional power of eggs and their importance in national food security.

Organized jointly by the Nepal Veterinary Association, Nepal Layers Farmers Association, and the U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC), the event took place in Bharatpur, bringing together poultry entrepreneurs, policymakers, health professionals, nutritionists, and other stakeholders.

This year’s celebration was held under the global theme “The Mighty Egg Packed with Natural Nutrition.” The program featured expert talks, panel discussions, and presentations on how eggs contribute to addressing protein deficiency and strengthening public health.

According to Dr. Ashesh Bhattarai, Country Lead for USSEC, the event sought to raise awareness and encourage higher egg consumption across Nepal. “Eggs are among nature’s most affordable sources of high-quality protein, vital for children’s growth, brain development, and overall well-being,” he said.

Despite their benefits, Nepal’s annual egg consumption remains low—around 70 eggs per person, far below the World Health Organization’s recommended 365 eggs per year, Bhattarai said.

As part of the week-long observance, the organizers plan to distribute eggs worth around Rs 2.5 million to vulnerable groups nationwide, including old age homes, pregnant women, differently-abled individuals, and school children.

Dr. Bhattarai said the initiative reflects the poultry sector’s commitment to improving national nutrition and ensuring eggs reach those who need them most. “An egg a day is not just a slogan but a practical step toward a healthier Nepal,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of both awareness and production in improving household nutrition and food security.
