KATHMANDU: Visiting United States Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor on Friday officially unveiled the “Ultra X Gen 2” American cargo drone built by Freefly Systems at Everest Base Camp.

During the launch, Gor described the drone as a strong example of American innovation and said cooperation between the US and Nepal could open new opportunities in the Himalayan region.

“This is among the finest technologies in the world, and it will help clean up areas around the summit of Mount Everest. It can also deliver emergency supplies,” Gor said while launching the drone.

According to him, the initiative reflects a strong partnership between the US and Nepal. “We are reaching new heights as America celebrates its 250th anniversary,” he added.

The launch event was attended by Acting US Ambassador and Chargé d’Affaires Scott Urbom and Public Affairs Chief Mike Harker of the US Embassy in Kathmandu, among others.

The drone can carry up to 5 kg and is capable of supporting rescue missions, delivering emergency supplies such as oxygen cylinders, and assisting in cleanup operations in the Everest region. Built by Freefly Systems, it is also used for lifting heavy cameras for filming. A crew from Airlift Technologies assisted the US delegation in launching the drone.

However, despite the official unveiling, the drone has not yet begun flight operations, as it still requires approval from government authorities, sources said. Officials added that it will become fully operational only after completing the necessary permission process.
