KATHMANDU: Seven Summit Treks' rope-fixing team reached the summit of Mount Makalu (8,485m) at 5:40 PM on Saturday, marking the first successful ascent of the peak in the Spring 2026 season and opening the route for the remainder of the climbing season.

The six-member fixing team comprised Dawa Sherpa (Speed Dawa), Pasang Nurbu Sherpa, Pema Chhumbi Sherpa, Mohan Singh Tamang, Phurbu Kusang Sherpa and Phudorchi Sherpa.

The summit carries particular significance for Seven Summit Treks, whose directors hail from the Makalu region. The company has been leading rope-fixing operations on the peak for several years.

With Makalu now open, three of Nepal's 8,000-metre peaks have recorded their first summits of the spring season. Climbers have already topped Annapurna (8,091m) and Dhaulagiri (8,167m) earlier this season.

Makalu, the world's fifth-highest mountain at 8,485 metres, sits on the Nepal–Tibet border in the Mahalangur Himalayas, approximately 19 kilometres southeast of Mount Everest.
