KATHMANDU: Gasherbrum II (8,035m) in Pakistan's Karakoram range recorded its first summit of the season on July 21, when all members and Sherpa guides of the Imagine Nepal expedition reached the top at 10:00 am Pakistan Standard Time on Tuesday — with a Singaporean climber making history as the first from her country to summit the peak.

Sim Phei Sunn became the first Singaporean mountaineer to summit Gasherbrum II, adding her name to a list of national firsts on the world's thirteenth highest mountain, according to Mingma G, Managing director of the Imagine Nepal.

The summit also marked significant milestones for several other team members. Phur Galjen Sherpa completed his 13th ascent of an 8,000-metre peak with Monday's climb and will next lead the team on Gasherbrum I as he closes in on a complete sweep of all 14 eight-thousanders. He has also previously climbed Yalung Kang (8,505m), Mingma G added.

Chinese mountaineer Wang Zhong has now completed 12 of the 14 eight-thousanders, with only Broad Peak and Shishapangma remaining between him and the full collection.

Ukrainian climber Valentyn Sypavin — who summited Everest earlier this spring as part of an 8K Expeditions team — added Gasherbrum II as his sixth 8,000-metre summit of 2026 alone, an exceptional pace across a single season.

Aangdu Sherpa reached the Gasherbrum II summit for the third time, while Lhakpa Nuru Sherpa — who has previously climbed K2 twice and Broad Peak — claimed his third 8,000-metre peak in Pakistan with Monday's ascent.

Mingma G said the achievement reflected exceptional teamwork and high-altitude expertise across the expedition.
