KATHMANDU: Polish alpinist Bartosz Kacper Ziemski on Tuesday scripted mountaineering history by summiting Mt Everest (8,848.86m) without supplemental oxygen and skiing down from the top, just one week after completing an identical feat on Mt Lhotse (8,516m), making him the first person ever to ski descend both peaks in a single season without oxygen.

Ziemski summited Everest on May 19 and skied down towards Base Camp in true alpine style, climbing solo without Sherpa support before completing the full descent, according to Chhang Dawa Sherpa, Expedition Director at Seven Summit Treks, which organised and supported the expedition.

The achievement comes exactly seven days after his Lhotse ski descent on May 12, when he became the first climber this season to summit the world's fourth highest mountain before skiing all the way back to Base Camp. "Climbing solo in alpine style from Camp IV to the summit without Sherpa support, he then completed an incredible full ski descent from the summit all the way back to Base Camp," Chhang Dawa said.

The Everest summit and descent mark Ziemski's ninth eight-thousander, all completed without supplemental oxygen and without personal Sherpa support. His Himalayan ski portfolio now includes Annapurna I, Kangchenjunga, Dhaulagiri, Makalu, Manaslu, Gasherbrum I, Broad Peak, Lhotse, and Everest.
