KATHMANDU: The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), in collaboration with the Nepal Mountain Instructors’ Association (NMIA), has launched the 7th Ice Climbing Level One Training Program in Humde, Manang. The two-week training is being conducted from January 27 to February 5, 2026.
According to NTB, the program formally commenced with a soft opening in Kathmandu on January 23, where participants underwent theoretical classes and outdoor orientation sessions to prepare for the intensive field-based training in the high Himalayan region.
The training program aims to strengthen technical ice-climbing skills, promote international safety standards, and create employment opportunities within Nepal’s mountaineering sector. It aligns with Nepal’s long-term vision of providing safe, professional, and world-class mountaineering services, building on the global reputation of Nepali climbers and guides.
A total of 36 participants are taking part in the program under the supervision of 11 experienced instructors. The curriculum includes practical training on the use of essential climbing equipment such as ice axes, crampons, harnesses, helmets, carabiners, belay devices, slings, and ropes. Participants are also being trained in rope fixing, anchor building, safety and protection systems, rescue techniques, and other field-based skills required for high-altitude and technical mountaineering.
The field training in Humde was attended by NTB Senior Director Hikmat Singh Ayer and NTB Manager Bimal Kadel, reflecting the commitment of both NTB and NMIA to capacity building and professional development in the mountaineering sector.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive internationally recognized certification, enhancing their professional credibility and employability in Nepal as well as in the global mountaineering industry.
