KATHMANDU: Nepal's Spring 2026 Himalayan climbing season has delivered a historic chapter for the country's adventure tourism industry, with a cascade of record-breaking summits culminating in more than 270 climbers reaching the top of Mount Everest (8,848.86m) in a single day.

The remarkable single-day figure, confirmed by the Expedition Operators Association Nepal (EOAN), underscores the scale and momentum of a season that began with a milestone of its own — over 500 permit holders registered for Everest from the Nepal side, the highest number ever recorded.

The season has also produced landmark personal achievements. Kami Rita Sherpa, whose name has become synonymous with Everest mastery, added a 32nd summit to his unmatched tally. On the women's side, Lhakpa Sherpa reached the top for the 11th time, and Purnima Shrestha for the sixth — both setting new records in their categories. An 18-year-old Australian climber's successful ascent added a generational dimension to an already remarkable season.

EOAN's rope-fixing team — a critical operational backbone of any Everest season — completed the summit route on May 13, clearing the way for the wave of successful climbs that followed.

"This is an extremely proud and joyous moment for Nepal's mountain tourism sector," said EOAN Secretary General Rishi Ram Bhandari. "These achievements have further elevated Nepal's international standing in mountaineering and adventure tourism."

According to the EOAN, this is one of the largest and most historic single-day ascents in the history of Nepal’s mountain tourism.
