KATHMANDU: American endurance athlete Tyler Andrews has begun an attempt to set the fastest known time (FKT) for the route from Everest Base Camp to Lukla, according to expedition organiser Asian Trekking.
Andrews started the timed run from Everest Base Camp at around 7:40am on Tuesday, said Dawa Steven Sherpa, managing director of Asian Trekking.
He travelled by helicopter from Namche Bazaar to Gorakshep earlier in the morning and trekked from Gorakshep to Everest Base Camp before beginning the attempt.
Andrews set an oxygen-assisted speed record for climbing Mount Everest in May, reaching the summit from base camp in nine hours and 55 minutes. He broke the previous record of 10 hours and 56 minutes set by Lakpa Gelu Sherpa in 2003.
David Byrne and Majell Backhausen set a Fastest Known Time (FKT) for trip from Everest Base Camp to Lukla in Nepal on December 11, 2023. They completed the out-and-back journey in a time of 9 hours, 47 minutes, and 59 seconds, doing so in a self-supported style.
