KATHMANDU: A two-member climbing team supported by 14 Peaks Expedition reached the summit of Mt Makalu (8,485m), the world's fifth highest peak, on Tuesday at 5:05 pm NST — completing an unusually timed ascent that saw the team push from Camp III in the early morning and top out in the late evening.

Alexander Bachmann and Vladimir Kotlyar summited alongside Sherpa team members Kami Temba Sherpa, Dorchi Sherpa, and Taraman Tamang.

The team completed an overnight descent and returned safely to base camp, with all members reported in good condition.

The late afternoon summit is a notable departure from the norm on Makalu, where most teams begin their summit bids at night and reach the top in the early morning hours.

The ascent adds to what has been a standout season for Bachmann and Kotlyar, who also summited Mt Annapurna on April 18 — completing an Annapurna-Makalu double within a single spring season. The expedition said the team's next objectives are Lhotse and Kangchenjunga.
