Press Council probes ICU interviews of Everest survivor, flood rescue patient

The Council has written to the concerned journalists, hospitals and Medical Council as part of its study and monitoring.

KATHMANDU: The Press Council Nepal has begun studying and monitoring interviews conducted with critically ill survivors inside intensive care units, including an earlier interview of Everest survivor Dawa Sherpa broadcast by BBC Nepali.

The Council said on Monday that its attention had been drawn to material published by the YouTube channel Inside the Bunker, which interviewed people receiving treatment in an ICU after being rescued from the Trishuli 3A Hydropower project 10 days after the Rasuwa flood.

It also referred to an earlier BBC Nepali video interview with a mountain guide who was found alive on the seventh day after going missing on Mount Everest and was interviewed while receiving treatment in an ICU.

The Council said it was conducting further study and monitoring of the materials within the framework of the journalists’ code of conduct. It added that letters had been sent to the concerned media workers, hospitals and the Nepal Medical Council seeking information for the study.
