KATHMANDU: Scientists from China and Nepal are now assessing the possible causes of the flood in the Bhote Koshi River.
“Based on a very preliminary assessment and discussions with scientists from Nepal and China, an ice avalanche blocked the Lhende River, causing the flood,” said Nepali scientist Mohan B. Chand.
The avalanche originated from Nepal's side (somewhere near 28.281051°N and 85.545404°E), and there is still a water level of 7 meters at monitoring stations. There is also a high possibility of snow avalanches associated with the burst.
“We may expect another wave of flooding. Also, there was a 4.4-magnitude earthquake at 8:37 a.m. , according to the USGS.”
