Organisation honoured in Climate Action category for low-carbon, earthquake-resilient construction innovation

KATHMANDU: Nepal-based social enterprise Build Up Nepal has been awarded the Zayed Sustainability Prize 2026 in the Climate Action category, marking a major international recognition for the country’s contribution to sustainable development and climate resilience.

The award was presented by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, at a special ceremony held during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) on January 13 in Abu Dhabi.

Established in 2008 under the patronage of the UAE President, the Zayed Sustainability Prize is one of the country’s most prestigious global awards. It recognises impactful and innovative solutions in sectors including health, food, energy, water, climate action and global high schools, while honouring the legacy of the UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Build Up Nepal was recognised for its pioneering work in sustainable and disaster-resilient construction, particularly through the production of low-carbon, earthquake-resistant eco-bricks. According to the organisation, it has produced 3.3 million eco-bricks, helped construct more than 12,000 resilient homes, created 2,000 green jobs, and avoided an estimated 110,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

The eco-bricks significantly reduce construction costs while improving safety and resilience in earthquake-prone regions, including Jajarkot and West Rukum, areas frequently affected by seismic activity.

The award underscores Nepal’s growing role in global sustainability efforts and highlights the impact of locally driven innovation in addressing climate change, disaster risk and sustainable development challenges.

Nepal’s Ambassador to the UAE, Tej Bahadur Chhetri, attended the award ceremony held at the inauguration of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. The Embassy of Nepal in Abu Dhabi praised Build Up Nepal for its dedicated efforts and contributions to sustainable development.

The award was received on behalf of the organisation by Bjorn Soderberg, Managing Director of Build Up Nepal.
