KATHMANDU: A six-member Russian climbing team has begun an expedition to 7,710-metre Kumbhakarna (Jannu) Himal in Taplejung district, departing Kathmandu on Tuesday for the autumn climbing season.

The expedition, led by 42-year-old Sergei Romanenkov, has been issued a 60-day climbing permit by the Department of Tourism. The other members are Artem Zhdanov, Ivan Artemov, Ivan Volkov, Roman Shilin and Vasilii Jagodin.

According to expedition organisers, the team will approach the mountain via the Taplejung-Yamfudin-Ramchaur route before establishing operations at Base Camp.

The expedition is being managed in Nepal by Himalayan Rambler Treks and Expedition Pvt Ltd.

Organisers said the Russian group is currently the only team attempting Kumbhakarna during the autumn climbing season.

Kumbhakarna, also known as Jannu Himal, is a 7,710-metre peak in eastern Nepal.
