KATHMANDU: A nine-member team from Imagine Nepal reached the summit of Mount Dhaulagiri (8,167m) on April 17, completing a gruelling ascent that saw the expedition battered by severe storms and ten days of blizzards that destroyed fixed ropes and supplies on the mountain.
The team made their move when a brief weather window opened, pushing from Camp 2 to Camp 3 before launching their final summit bid. All nine members topped out between 11:40 AM and 2:00 PM Nepal Time.
The summit team comprised Liu Hong, Liu Yishi and Wang Zhong of China, Christine Vogondy of Switzerland, and Nepali guides Fur Gyalgen Sherpa, Pasang Namgel Sherpa, Kili Pemba Sherpa, Ngima Nuru Sherpa and Pema Chirri Sherpa. The team had safely descended to Camp 3 as of the latest update.
The ascent is the first recorded summit on Dhaulagiri this spring. Pioneer Adventures later placed a 17-member team of international climbers and Nepali guides on top.
Dhaulagiri, at 8,167 metres, is the world's seventh-highest mountain and lies entirely within Nepal in the Gandaki Province.
