KATHMANDU: The Himalayan Rescue Association Nepal (HRA) conducted a two-day Advanced Wilderness First Aid Training for trekking guides on August 22 and 23, focusing on strengthening their skills to respond to medical and emergency situations in remote mountain environments.

The training was held at the HRA office in Lazimpat for a new group of trekking guides from Nepal Hiking Team. It combined classroom-based instruction with practical, hands-on exercises aimed at improving participants' confidence and emergency response capabilities.

The training covered a range of mountain and wilderness medical emergencies, including altitude sickness, basic life support, trauma management, seizures, cold injuries, environmental emergencies and common medical conditions.

Participants were also trained in the use of Gamow bags and supplemental oxygen, patient transfer techniques, first-aid kit management, spinal injuries, dislocations, and responses to bites and stings.

HRA said such training is important for trekking guides who are often among the first responders when tourists face medical emergencies in remote areas where access to professional medical care can be limited.

The association said the programme forms part of its efforts to strengthen safety preparedness in Nepal's trekking and mountaineering sector and equip guides with practical skills to manage emergencies until patients can receive further medical care.
