KATHMANDU: Renowned Nepali mountaineer and IFMGA/UIAGM-certified guide Jyamchang Bhote has summited Mount Everest for the 10th time, reaching the peak early on the morning of May 23 while leading a team of British military personnel this is spring season.

Bhote, 45, from Sankhuwasabha, was part of an expedition that included members of the United Kingdom’s special ranger force. Together with nine British soldiers and 14 other Nepali climbers, he successfully stood atop the world’s highest mountain.

UK’s special force members who scaled Mt Everest along with Jyamchang include Maj Joe Adamson - Expedition Leader, Maj Kate Thompson - Chief Medical Officer, Lt Col Raj Joshi - Operations Officer, Capt Jacob Sargent, WO2 Avtar Gill - Exped 2IC, SSgt Ryan McGregor, Sgt Silas Simpson, Sgt Vince Sulaiman, Cpl Will Goddard - RM ML, LCpl Chris White, LCpl Kishor Thapa, Rgr Bijaya Rana and Sgt Ali Holman - Royal Marines ML / Chief Instructor.

“I scaled Everest with the British Army team in 2025, and luckily again this season with the British military,” Jyamchang shared.

The expedition, organized by Himalayan Sherpa Adventure, saw a total of 25 summiteers—nine British army personnel and 15 Nepali guides. “Among them, five of us were IFMGA guides,” he added.

Jyamchang’s climbing career reads like a catalogue of Himalayan giants and beyond. His early notable ascents include Island Peak (2000) and Mera Peak (2001). By 2003, he had reached the summits of Cho Oyu (8,201m) and Shishapangma (8,013m) in Tibet. In 2004, he made his first Everest ascent from the north side, beginning a series of successful climbs on the peak. Since then, he has summited Everest multiple times: in 2004, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, twice in 2012 with the Indian Army, and in 2021, 2025, and now 2026 with the British Army team.

Beyond the Himalayas, Jyamchang has also summited Antarctica’s Vinson Massif—marking his 15th historic ascent there—and has led guiding trips to the Emperor Penguin Colony at Gould Bay and the South Pole. During his 2025 Everest climb, he carried an environmentally themed flag to promote climate action, forest preservation, and greenery.

Jyamchang serves as a senior instructor for both the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) and the Nepal Mountaineering Instructor Association (NMIA), leading courses from basic rock climbing for schoolchildren to advanced training for professional guides. He is also a life member of the US Nepal Climbers Association, a former executive board member of the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA), a general member of the NMA, and an associate member of the Everest Summiteers Association.
