KATHMANDU: A renowned American mountain guide has scaled Mt Everest for the 16th time this morning, becoming the second non-Nepali climber to have made the most ascents on Mt Everest.

According to Iswari Paudel, Managing Director of Himalayan Guides, Garrett Madison of Madison Mountaineering along with four other climbers from HG stood atop the world's highest peak at around 9:50 am. "Madison, America's premier Everest guide and expedition leader, who began guiding professionally in 1999 on Mount Rainier, has reached the top of Everest 16 times," Paudel said.

According to Paudel, Garrett is now the second foreigner after legendary British climber Kenton Cool to make the most ascents of Mt Everest.

Last year, Garrett equaled the Everest summit count of American climber Dave Hahn, who stood atop Everest for the 15th time in 2013.

British climber Kenton Cool is the only foreigner to have summited Everest for the 20th time this season. Legendary climber Kami Rita Sherpa holds the world record for the most ascents of Everest (32 times). Pasang Dawa (Pa Dawa) Sherpa is just one ascent behind Kami Rita, with 31.
