GORKHA: Flooding in Nepal's Nubri–Manaslu region has damaged bridges, trekking trails and homes, prompting the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) to call for urgent search and rescue preparedness amid concerns that trekkers may be stranded.
The bridge connecting Nyakchet and Philim Bazaar in Chumanubri Rural Municipality, Gorkha, was reportedly swept away by floodwaters, while muddy water entered homes in the Ghatte Khola area. The river level was continuing to rise, according to an alert issued by the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA).
The NNMGA said Nepal Police, the Armed Police Force, Nepal Army and local authorities were involved in emergency response operations. Helicopters had also been deployed to support rescue efforts and evacuate affected residents to safer locations.
In a separate notice, the NMA said information received through the Department of Immigration indicated that several trekkers might be stranded in the valley because of damaged bridges and disrupted access routes. The association called for immediate assessments, search and rescue operations, and emergency assistance wherever necessary.
NMA General Secretary Rajendra Bahadur Lama urged mountaineers, rescue professionals and emergency response teams to remain on standby and inform the association of their availability. He also asked stakeholders to report urgent rescue requirements to the NMA Secretariat to help coordinate with relevant authorities.
The flooding has raised concerns over the safety of local residents, trekkers, mountain guides and porters in the affected region. However, the number and locations of any stranded trekkers had not been confirmed in the notices.
Residents and visitors have been advised to stay away from riverbanks, damaged bridges, flooded roads and landslide-prone slopes, and to follow instructions from local authorities. They should not attempt to cross flooded rivers or damaged bridges.
