KATHMANDU: The mortal remains of four climbers are now in Islamabad, Pakistan, as authorities expedite the repatriation process to send them to their home countries.

According to officials at Nepal's Embassy in Pakistan, the bodies of the four victims of the Broad Peak avalanche are in Islamabad, with the necessary documentation process in its final stage for their repatriation.

“The body of renowned Nepali-British mountaineer Nirmal Purja ‘Nimsdai’ was sent to London from Islamabad on Saturday,” officials said, adding that British military personnel and family members arrived in Pakistan to transport Nimsdai’s body to London for final rituals, as per the family’s decision. Lawmaker and co-owner of Elite Exped, Mingma Gyabu Sherpa, will also attend Nimsdai’s final rituals in London.

The remaining three bodies—those of Kili Pemba Sherpa ‘Kilu’, Nima Sherpa, and Gyalu Sherpa—will be sent to Kathmandu on Tuesday, as officials hope the documentation process will be completed by Monday. “Wang Zhong’s body will be taken to China,” they added. Zhong’s family members are also arriving in Islamabad soon.

A team led by renowned climber Mingma G recovered five bodies on August 5 from the avalanche site on Broad Peak.

A massive avalanche on July 30 killed 10 climbers—including Nimsdai, Kilu, Nima, Nawang Thindhu, Gyalu, Pur Bahadur Gurung ‘Yukkta’, American climber Mallory Geis, Chinese climber Wang Zhong, Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi, and Omani climber Nadhira Al Harthy—while they were ascending the world’s 12th-highest mountain.

The search team failed to recover Nawang Thindhu’s body, while Pakistani climber Sohail remains missing. The remains of Mallory, Nadhira, and Yukta have already been sent to their home countries for final rituals.
