BREAKING: Massive avalanche strikes Himlung Himal base camp; at least 10 missing

KATHMANDU: A massive avalanche, following incessant rain and heavy snowfall, buried Himlung Himal base camp in western Nepal early this morning, expedition organizers confirmed.
At least eight climbers and support staff members from Himalayan Holidays Nepal, as well as two kitchen staff members from Imagine Nepal Treks, were reported missing after the avalanche swept away tents at the base camp, according to the organizers.
Bibhu Chand Thakur, chairman of Himalayan Holidays Nepal, said he had received information from the base camp that at least eight people from his company were out of contact. Mingma G, owner of Imagine Nepal, said two kitchen staff members had lost contact after the incident.
“We are waiting for the details,” said Thakur.
Most of the members and staff from other expedition-organizing companies had already descended from the base camp to lower areas following weather warnings, according to the Expedition Operators Association Nepal.
Expedition operators had earlier mobilized support staff to Himalung Himal to prepare base camp for the expeditions.
