KATHMANDU: A team of climbers under the leadership of renowned American ski mountaineer Jim Morrison and filmmaker Jimmy Chin successfully climbed Mt Everest from the Tibetan side as Morrison plans to ski down from the top, sources claimed.
“A few climbers of the team along with Nepali guides stood atop the Everest summit as they scaled the world’s highest mountain via Hornbein Couloir early this afternoon at around 2:00pm Chinese time,” sources confirmed.
There is a successful summit by a few climbers but we are still waiting for the details, sources shared, adding that they are waiting the names of summiteers.
The team began summit push last night as weather was quite fair and calm, sources said, adding that they, however, struggled hard to proceed further above the steep Couloir, sources shared.
Morrison aims to complete the ski descent from Everest’s summit via Hornbein Couloir as a tribute to his late partner Hilaree Nelson, who died during a similar attempt on Manaslu in 2022. The multi-million-dollar National Geographic/The North Face project, is logistically managed by Alpenglow Expeditions.
Chin is set to film the historic descent as part of the project. Last year’s mission was canceled after guides met with an accident near Camp II.
Sources close to Tibetan authorities also confirmed that all Nepali Sherpa climbers who were there for the ambitious project would be exiting from China border on October 19.
