Nepal monitors Broad Peak Avalanche, coordinates rescue with Pakistan

Nepal’s Foreign Ministry said it is closely monitoring rescue efforts after the Broad Peak avalanche, with its embassy in Islamabad coordinating with Pakistani authorities.

KATHMANDU: Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Friday it is closely monitoring the situation following the avalanche on Broad Peak, with the Nepali Embassy in Islamabad coordinating with Pakistani authorities, including the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP), to facilitate the swift and safe rescue of all affected mountaineers.

In a press release issued from Singhadurbar, the ministry said it had been informed by Pakistani authorities that search-and-rescue operations are underway, and that assurances had been given that all available resources will be mobilized for a timely rescue.

According to information received by the Nepali Embassy, the expedition team to Broad Peak — led by veteran climber Nirmal Purja “Nims Dai” — comprises Pur Bahadur Gurung “Yukta,” Kili Pemba Sherpa “Kilu,” Nima Sherpa, Nawang Thindu Sherpa and Gyalu Sherpa, along with Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy of Oman, Sohail Sakhi of Pakistan, Wang Zhong of China, and Mallory Geis of the United States.

Authorities in both countries continue to coordinate as rescue teams work in challenging conditions on one of the world’s highest peaks.
