Upper Mustang remains open to tourists after 5.3-magnitude earthquake

KATHMANDU: Upper Mustang remains open to tourists following a 5.3-magnitude earthquake that struck Lo Manthang on Tuesday night, with roads, trekking trails, hotels and communication services reported to be operating normally.
According to the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN), the earthquake struck Lo Manthang at 9:33pm, followed by minor aftershocks on Wednesday morning.
Some minor damage has been reported at a few local monasteries, but the Assistant Chief District Officer of Mustang has confirmed that there has been no significant disruption to tourism infrastructure or services in the area, TAAN said.
Roads and trekking trails remain operational, while tourist hotels and lodges and communication facilities are functioning normally. Tourism activities in Upper Mustang are continuing as usual.
TAAN has advised visitors to remain cautious and stay aware of their surroundings while travelling in the earthquake-affected area, but said there was no need for panic.
Upper Mustang, including Lo Manthang, remains accessible to visitors, the association said.
