KATHMANDU: The Um Hong-gil Human Foundation, a South Korean NGO working in Nepal's education and health sectors, is expanding its flood response from search-and-rescue support to longer-term relief for displaced residents and affected institutions.

The foundation said on Friday that it would distribute emergency medicine and patient tents at the Uttar Gaya Health Post on September 12 in coordination with Nepal Kathmandu Model Hospital. The support will combine the foundation's relief funding with the hospital's medical expertise.

The foundation's Nepal branch has been assessing damage in coordination with relevant agencies and local governments. It plans to provide tents, school supplies and daily necessities at three or more additional locations based on the assessments.

It is also reviewing a plan to build a combined classroom and shelter facility at a school site destroyed by the floods. Special scholarships have been announced for students at the foundation-supported Human School who lost family members in the disaster.

The foundation said its first round of relief funds was remitted to Nepal on September 3, with second and third rounds planned in the coming weeks. It has been conducting an emergency relief fundraising campaign since late August.

Chairman Um Hong-gil said Nepal was like a second home to him and called for support to help families who had lost their homes and loved ones recover their daily lives.

The foundation said Um had mobilised $100,000 in emergency relief funds after the 2015 earthquake and travelled to affected areas as head of a Korean Red Cross emergency relief team.

Drawing on his experience of summiting all sixteen of the world's 8,000-metre peaks, Um said he was confident that Nepal would overcome the crisis and pledged continued support throughout the recovery process.

The foundation said the August 26 flooding caused mass casualties and left many people missing across Nepal, including nine South Korean workers reported missing.
