KATHMANDU: Nepalgunj is set to offer visitors a rare taste of Tharu culinary heritage this week, with the city hosting its first-ever Tharu indigenous food festival from April 30 to May 2.
The three-day event, organised by Soaltee Western Premier Nepal, is open daily from early morning to 11:00 pm. A Rs 500 voucher covers food sampling, and entry to the festival grounds is free. Cultural performances each evening from 9:00 pm to 10:00 pm add to the experience, with Tharu living traditions, arts, and customs on display throughout.
According to the organisers, the festival aims to move Tharu food culture — long preserved within the community — into broader national and international visibility. Experienced cooks will prepare the dishes, ensuring authenticity sits at the centre of the offering.
For travellers passing through the Terai or visiting Bardiya and Banke, the festival presents a timely opportunity to engage with one of Nepal's most distinctive indigenous cultures through its cuisine.
