Spanish trekker trapped in snow at 5,700m rescued after 5 days

KATHMANDU: A Spanish tourist who was stranded near the base camp of Sherpani Col in the Makalu region for five days was safely rescued this morning.

According to Mingma Sherpa, Chairman of Seven Summit Treks, Jesus Martinez Novas from Spain was evacuated by a rescue team from Seven Summit Treks using a Heli Everest chopper.

The 60-year-old solo traveler had been stranded at 5,700m since October 27 after heavy snow and rain hit the high Himalayas.

Lakpa Sherpa, Chairman of Heli Everest, stated that Easy Heli Charter Services coordinated the mission, which was successfully carried out by Captain Priya Adhikari and mountain guide Jenjen Lama from Seven Summit Treks.

Martinez had run out of food and was suffering from frostbite. Sherpa added that the rescue was conducted today after the weather improved following five days of poor conditions.
