KATHMANDU: World record-holding mountaineer and tourism entrepreneur Mingma Sherpa has formally entered parliamentary politics, filing his nomination as a candidate for the House of Representatives from Sankhuwasabha.

Sherpa, who represents the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), submitted his nomination from the constituency on Sunday, according to party sources. A permanent resident of Makalu Rural Municipality–1, Walung, Sherpa is internationally recognised for scaling all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres, becoming the first Nepali and South Asian climber to achieve the feat without repetition.

He is also the chairman of Seven Summit Treks, one of Nepal’s leading expedition companies, and, together with his brother Chhang Dawa Sherpa, holds a Guinness World Record as the world’s first pair of brothers to summit all 14 eight-thousanders.

Party leaders said Sherpa’s candidacy reflects RSP’s focus on fielding individuals with proven leadership experience beyond conventional politics, particularly from sectors such as tourism, adventure sports and local development.

Sherpa has also drawn attention for his humanitarian initiatives in remote Himalayan regions. Sherpa has previously supported several rescue and medical assistance efforts for vulnerable communities in high-altitude and remote districts.

RSP sources said Sherpa recently joined the party and has already begun engaging with voters in Sankhuwasabha, positioning his campaign around development, connectivity, tourism potential and improved access to basic services in mountain regions.
