KATHMANDU: Nepal’s Terai region has been featured in Lonely Planet’s ‘Best in Travel 2025’ list, spotlighting it as one of the top global regions to explore in the coming year. The travel guide’s annual list celebrates 30 exceptional destinations, curated by its well-traveled editorial team.

Often overshadowed by the Himalayas and the capital Kathmandu, the Terai’s southern lowlands offer equally unforgettable experiences, according to Lonely Planet. Highlights include the one-horned rhinos of Chitwan National Park, and the Maya Devi Temple in Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha in 563 BCE.

The guide also recommends canoe or boat safaris on the Rapti River in Chitwan to spot rhinos and gharial crocodiles, a visit to Lumbini’s spiritual heritage sites, and tea garden tours in Ilam, as a "feast for the eyes and the tastebuds."

The recognition places the Terai on the global travel radar, highlighting Nepal’s diverse offerings beyond its mountain trails. With a unique mix of wildlife, history, spirituality, and scenic beauty, the Terai is poised to attract more visitors seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences in 2025.
