KATHMANDU: A book entitled Six Steps on Everest, written by renowned mountaineer and TV journalist Kami Sherpa, was released in Kathmandu today.
At an event organised by the Everest Summiteers Association, renowned spiritual guru Tolaka Rinpoche, along with president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association Phur Gelje Sherpa, president of the ESA Maya Sherpa, and other dignitaries, unveiled the book.
The memoir, published in English and Nepali, chronicles the life of Kami Sherpa, who scaled Mt Everest six times. The book, edited by Yubaraj Nayaghare, also documents the ups and downs Kami faced while struggling in journalism as well as in mountaineering.
The author, Kami, shared that mountains and Sherpas are complementary to each other. “My memoir covers all aspects of mountain life as well as the struggles that every human being faces while attempting to achieve their goals,” Kami said. Kami also thanked all his supporters and well-wishers for inspiring him to write the biography.
Editor Nayaghare said that his book would inspire younger generations to understand mountains, mountain communities, Sherpas, and their struggles. “Every success story of Kami, as documented in the book, is inspirational to all,” he said.
Senior journalist Raju Silwal, who supervised Kami’s work at Nepal Television, recounted his dedication and courage in finding stories about climbers and mountains. “Kami was a role model at Nepal TV,” he shared.
Kami has already been honoured on several occasions in recognition of his contributions to promoting Nepal's adventure tourism globally. In 2007, while working as a video journalist for Nepal Television, Kami broadcast live from the summit, also covering various activities on the world’s highest peak. Earlier, he was honoured with the Hem Sunil Risky Television Journalism Award, which included a cash prize of one lakh rupees. Kami, who currently resides in California, remains actively involved in promoting Nepal, Sherpa culture, and social services.
The book launch event was attended by Ram Krishna Lamichhane, Director General at the Department of Tourism; Chairman of the Nepal Sherpa Association Dawa Sherpa; Diwas Pokharel, Vice-President of the ESA; and mountaineer and author Lakhphuti Sherpa, among others.
The event was chaired by ESA President Maya Sherpa, and ESA Vice President Pokharel delivered the welcome remarks. All speakers congratulated Kami on his inspirational memoir.
