DHM issues rainfall alert for Koshi, Gandaki, and Sudurpaschim provinces as monsoon remains active

KATHMANDU: Travelers heading to Nepal’s hilly regions should prepare for wet weather, as the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has forecast heavy downpours at isolated locations in Koshi, Gandaki, and Sudurpaschim Provinces today and tonight.

According to the DHM, skies will remain generally cloudy across the country, with moderate rain likely in hilly areas and scattered rainfall possible in other provinces. The forecast warns of localized heavy showers in the eastern and far-western hills, conditions that may affect mountain roads, trekking routes, and flights in these regions.

For tonight, the DHM predicts continued cloudy conditions nationwide, with chances of moderate rainfall in Koshi, Gandaki, and Sudurpaschim, as well as in other hilly belts.

In the Kathmandu Valley, residents and visitors can expect cloudy skies with rain showers this afternoon, with maximum temperatures ranging from 26°C to 28°C and a 70% chance of rain. Similar conditions are expected tonight, with temperatures dipping to 20°C to 22°C.

Meteorologists report that the monsoon trough is currently positioned slightly south of its normal path in the east, while it remains close to average in western Nepal. This alignment is contributing to moisture inflow and unstable weather across the country.

Travelers are advised to carry rain gear, plan for possible transport delays, and check with airlines and local operators when traveling to or from hill destinations during this period.

Traveler’s Weather Advisory

  • Carry Essentials: Rain jackets, umbrellas, and waterproof footwear are recommended for city tourists and trekkers alike.
  • Flight Updates: Domestic flights to hilly airports (such as Lukla, Pokhara, and Jomsom) may face delays—check with airlines in advance.
  • Road Conditions: Landslides and slippery roads are possible on highways and trekking routes—plan buffer travel time.
  • Valley Visitors: Afternoon and evening showers are common; sightseeing in the morning is more favorable.
  • Trekking Tip: Stay updated with local guides on trail conditions, especially in the eastern and western hills.
