KATHMANDU: A four-member international team supported by Nepal-based 8K Expeditions successfully summited Gasherbrum I (8,080 meters) in Pakistan's Karakoram range on July 20.
According to the 8K Expedition, they summitted the peak at 11:08 AM (PST), overcoming dry weather, reduced support, and unpredictable mountain conditions.
The successful climbers include:
Pavlo Sydorenko (Ukraine)
Magdalena Arcimowicz (Poland)
Migma Dorchi Sherpa (Nepal)
Pem Lakpa Sherpa (Nepal)
8K Expeditions praised the team's determination and resilience, calling the summit a testament to their hard work amid one of the season’s most challenging conditions. "This accomplishment reflects their hard work and dedication in the face of extreme challenges. We wish the entire team a safe and successful descent," it posted.
While Gasherbrum I has seen some success, 8K noted that prospects for other major peaks in the Karakoram, including K2, Gasherbrum II, and Broad Peak, remain uncertain. Difficulties in setting up Camp III on K2 and a poor weather forecast are likely to delay or disrupt further summit attempts.
The expedition was conducted in partnership with @8000club and logistics provided by @summitkarakoram. The team continues to monitor the situation for future climbs while prioritizing climbers' safety.
