KATHMANDU: A Nepali climber died in the Khumbu Icefall this morning while heading to the high camp from Everest Base Camp, officials confirmed.
The deceased has been identified as Bijay Ghimire, a climber from Solu Dudhkunda municipality in Solukhumbu district. Ghimire, who had climbed Mt. Everest several times in the past, was also a well‑known YouTuber. His body has been recovered and airlifted to Lukla by Altitude Air, officials said.
Ghimire was part of an expedition locally managed by TAG Nepal Treks and Expeditions, officials added. This is the second death of the season on Mt. Everest. Earlier, a Sherpa guide died near Everest Base Camp, just above Gorak Shep.
Initial reports suggest Ghimire died of cardiac arrest, though details are still awaited. Ghimire, who had climbed Everest four times, is the first from Dalit community to scale the world’s highest peak.
“Ghimire’s body will be handed over to his family after postmortem,” said Lukla police.
